Associate Degree

Master’s Degree

Doctorate Degree

A doctorate degree is a highly chosen academic degree traditionally. Choosing to study one major subject is known as a single honors degree. This also includes a bachelor’s degree with one major subject and a minor subject.

Choosing two or three major subjects as part of a bachelor’s degree is called a combined or joint honors degree.

Basically, it takes three years for a full-time student. Some programs, such as those with a year abroad or with a placement, can take four years. 

Foundation year/foundation diploma

A foundation diploma/ foundation year is an introductory course designed to bridge the gap between finishing school and starting a bachelor’s degree. 

This one-year diploma is for students who didn’t meet the entry requirements for a bachelor’s degree and is offered by most universities.

A foundation diploma will only take one year for full-time students.

Foundation degree

A foundation degree (FDA), is basically different from a foundation year \foundation diploma, 

Foundation degree is a level 5 qualification that has an emphasis on practical-based learning. They are equivalent to the first two years of a bachelor’s degree and usually involve a mix of academic study and workplace experience. Students either go straight into work after a foundation degree or move into the final year of a bachelor’s.

It takes 2 years for full-time students. Part-time students may complete by three to four years.

Top-up degree

A top-up degree is for students looking to complete the final year of a bachelor’s degree. Students who have done a level 5 qualification, such as a foundation degree, choose this path to upgrade their qualification to a full degree.

It will take one year to complete a top-up degree for a full-time student. Part-time students usually take 1 and half years i.e 18 months.

Higher National Certificate

A Higher National Certificate (HNC) is a one-year undergraduate equivalent to the first year of university. 

It will take one year to complete a top-up degree for a full-time student. Part-time students usually take 2 years.

Master’s degree

A master’s degree is the most studied degree at the postgraduate level. You can take upon this degree after completion of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent.

Common master’s degrees include:

• Master of Engineering (MEng)
• Master of Education (MEd)
• Master of Research (MRes)

Doctorate

A doctorate is the top postgraduate-level qualification you can achieve. You will spend the entire course working on an independent thesis, based on an original research proposal you put forward.

Full-time students finish their Ph.D. in three to four years. Those studying part-time can take up to six or seven years to complete their Ph.D.

Certificate Degree

Diploma Degree

There are different types of Diploma degrees in Canada, Regular Diploma, Advanced Diploma, and Graduate Diploma.

It is the first designation a student will pursue when entering the university level.

Students are provided a fifth professional year which is a supervised spectrum. This is offered by the professors. This degree is offered by all the universities of Canada and some colleges.

Master’s Degree

A Master’s degree is either course-based or research-based.

Ph.D. or Doctorate

TAFE in Australia

TAFE Diploma and advanced diploma

In Australia, diploma and advanced diploma programs teach theory and practical skills in a wide range of technical and/or management functions.

Associate Degree

Bachelor’s Degree

Postgraduate degree:

• Research Master’s: consists of research and a thesis. Requires successful completion of a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s preliminary year, Graduate Diploma, or equivalent research experience.
• It requires a two-year program at a university.

Postgraduate – Doctoral Degree

The Doctoral Degree is the highest award offered by Australian universities. Although it is a research degree, some programs may have a coursework component.

The duration of this degree is for three to seven years and is only offered by the universities.
